ICBA Raises Deep Concerns with Master Account Approval for Kraken Financial
March 04, 2026 / By ICBA
Washington, D.C. (March 4, 2026) — Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey issued the following statement sharing significant concerns with the approval of a master account for Kraken Financial.
“ICBA and the nation’s community banks are very concerned with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s approval of a master account for Kraken Financial. Granting nonbank entities and crypto institutions access to the master accounts traditionally limited to highly regulated insured depository institutions poses risks to the banking system.
“As stated in our recent comments on the Federal Reserve’s payment account prototype, there are significant risks to expanding direct Fed account access to institutions that operate outside the traditional banking regulatory framework. The Fed should continue limiting master account access to institutions that meet the financial services sector’s highest standards.
“ICBA and community bankers look forward to continuing to work with policymakers on this critical issue and the significant public policy concerns it raises.”
