Rebeca Romero Rainey: Customizing AI to Work for Your Community Bank

“We truly have a technology at our disposal that can be transformed into something that does what we need it to do, not just what it’s initially programmed to do.”
When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) and the way it’s being deployed today, I’m struck by its potential for customization. We truly have a technology at our disposal that can be transformed into something that does what we need it to do, not just what it’s initially programmed to do. That distinction makes AI a game changer for community banks.
We’re not a one-size-fits-all industry, and the strengths of AI play into that individualization. The power of AI is that we can tailor it to meet our needs. With so many different use cases and potential avenues for harnessing its impact, AI is truly one of the first technologies to provide a track for us to solve a problem or create an opportunity via an entirely personalized path.
Thoughtful experimentation
We are now at a stage for AI experimentation. Certainly, we need to be mindful of the risks and challenges, but we also need to investigate how we use our human resources versus our technology resources. AI is an opportunity to be more intentional as we seek efficiencies in the back office, unlock customer-facing opportunities and learn the full scope of what it can do.
By leaning into AI as a solution, we can be more efficient and effective and, at the same time, build stronger relationships with our customers and communities. Deployed strategically, AI will allow our teams to let go of routine, transactional tasks, creating more space for building the customer connections we are known for.
ICBA solutions
So, have fun rolling up your sleeves and exploring this new technology. AI can be daunting, but at the same time, it brings with it enormous possibilities—and potential you need to unlock for your bank.
To support you, ICBA has developed tools for your AI journey, including the ICBA AI Security Readiness Guide, which assesses the AI threat shift, explains what it means for local institutions and gives tips on how to strengthen third-party due diligence and test incident-response plans, among other topics. You can also tap into a complimentary webinar that dives into the guide and how it helps your institution’s resilience and AI readiness.
I invite you to use these and other insights found in our AI and Community Banking Resource Center to discover ways AI can better support your goals. Because AI is here to stay, and it’s up to us to embrace its power as part of the future of community banking.
