Last July, Community Bank Delaware in Lewes, Del., donated $3,000 to American Legion Post 28, an organization branch founded in 1920 to support local veterans, military personnel, their families and the broader community.
The $370 million-asset community bank’s donation went toward the purchase and installation of a flagpole honoring Space Force veterans. The flagpole serves as a tribute to past and current members of the United States armed forces’ newest service branch.
Community Bank Delaware often works closely with American Legion Post 28, which is the largest post in Delaware and the fourth-largest in the U.S. Given this existing rapport, the post’s leaders approached Community Bank Delaware for fundraising assistance.
Wm. Jack Riddle, president of Community Bank Delaware, said the bank was thankful for the opportunity to support the cause. “They came to us and said, ‘We really want to fill out all of the armed services [with designated flagpoles] … but we don’t have the funds,’” he explained, “so we said, ‘What’s the cost?’”
The community bank recognizes the importance of supporting those who have fought for the United States and is always looking for ways to honor their service. “The folks in the military have given so much to this country,” said Riddle. “If we can help them in little ways by sponsoring things they’re involved in or if it makes them feel good … that’s what we do.”
