[Bank president Lucas White and I] have been all over the country on our motorcycles and even into Canada … I purchased my first motorcycle in 2008 when my first child was about to go to college. I decided that was the right time of life to start something new … a year later I started traveling with [my son] on trips across the country.

Each trip has its special things. The ride to Canada, taking our motorcycles up on the ferry out to Prince Edward Island, being able to ride the island and take the bridge back to the mainland. I mean, those are just things you wouldn’t normally do. It’s an unusual trip, but it’s those most memorable parts of it.

I have done what they call the Iron Butt. That’s where you do 1,000 miles in 24 hours … The Iron Butt Association is long-distance motorcycle riders and they have different challenges … 1,000 miles in 24 hours was fun, but that’s a lot. We decided that enjoying the ride was more important than just pounding miles out.

The best advice is take a safety course. If you think you have any interest in it at all, sign up for a safety course, go through that course and see in the time that you’re going through that if it appeals to you. You’ll know just in that initial course if it’s for you or not. If there’s any hesitation, you shouldn’t do it. Safety on a motorcycle is different than safety in a car.
