Judd Halverson, Senior Vice President, Business Development, joined ICBA Payments in March 2025. In this role, he serves as a products and services expert for new and existing ICBA Payments clients. Judd offers some insight into his duties, his perspective on how far the industry has come, and how ICBA Payments helps banks navigate these changing waters.
What are you excited about in your role at ICBA Payments?
I’ve spent my entire career in the payments business working with financial institutions across the country and have been fortunate to work for some of the most well-known and visible companies in the payments space. But what really gets me excited about working at ICBA Payments is that our organization’s single focus is to help our community bank clients succeed when it comes to their payments strategies.
Share a little about your experience in the payments industry.
I basically stumbled into the payments industry in 1990 shortly after I got out of college, so have spent the last 35 years working in sales, sales leadership, and relationship management working for a handful of payments companies including FIS and Fiserv.
In my last job, I worked on the reseller team at FIS where I was responsible for finding new reseller and referral partners for FIS Payment Processing & Payment Network services. I spent the majority of my time working with core processors, bankers banks and trade associations that were interested in offering payment processing services to their financial institution clients around the country.
How would you define your career in 50 words or so?
When I took my first job working as a relationship manager for the Instant Cash ATM Network 35 years ago, I had no idea that I would, first, get hooked on payments, and second love working with banks on their ATM/debit and credit card programs. I feel very blessed to have worked with so many awesome companies, coworkers, mentors and bank clients during the course of my career.
What is one of the noteworthy stories that have occurred during your career?
I’ve definitely experienced some interesting things over the past 35 years. But when I think about things that are important, it’s been watching the consolidation that’s taken place in the debit and credit processing business that’s been going on since the late 1990s. At one point in time there were probably close to 100 or more regional providers of debit and credit card processing services that served community banks very well. As we sit here in 2025, the field of payment processing providers has been whittled down to just a handful of vendors. This hasn’t necessarily been a great thing for community banks and is probably the primary reason that I joined ICBA Payments. I believe we have a real opportunity to provide payments solutions to our client banks in a way that serves community banks well.
Is there anything else you’d like our bankers to know about you or how ICBA Payments supports them?
ICBA Payments is committed to helping community banks compete and thrive in the payments space. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, even if it’s just to get an opinion about some payment related matter. I am always happy to have a conversation with any of our client banks. We’re here to help!
