ICBA called on Congress to extend the National Flood Insurance Program authorization before it expires Sept. 30 to avoid further disruptions to the housing market.
ICBA Letter: In a letter to congressional leaders, ICBA advocated:
An immediate extension to avoid a lapse.
A long-term authorization to eliminate uncertainty and ensure the program is structured to be fiscally responsible, actuarily sound, affordable, and inclusive.
Background: The current extension was enacted in March as part of an omnibus spending bill that expires Sept. 30. Congress is working to include another NFIP extension in its next continuing resolution by the end of this month.
ICBA Comments: In a separate comment letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency earlier this year, ICBA laid out its suggestions to strengthen the NFIP, such as updated flood mapping, higher standards for certain structures facilities that perform critical actions, and incentives to mitigate repetitive flood losses.
