I grew up watching my family members in the kitchen, talking, laughing and sharing meals that brought everyone together. I think that’s where I learned that food isn’t just about eating; it’s about love and connection.
[My mother and grandmother] showed me not only how to cook but also to care for people through food. Some of my best lessons came from standing beside them, helping prepare [food for] Sunday dinners, holidays, different birthdays and occasions.
Cooking for others is a way of showing love and gratitude in my book. It’s my way of giving back, whether it’s a home-cooked meal for my family, dishes that I prepare for the community or just something to brighten someone’s day. Food brings people together; I’m a firm believer in that—it’s a powerful thing to me.

My grandmother has a traditional chicken and pastry that she’s taught me, and a lot of the elders in our family, that we like to pass down. It’s one of those dishes that everyone looks forward to. I hope to continue that tradition with my children and, in the future, my grandkids.
I always tell people, don’t be afraid to cook from the heart. Recipes are helpful, but the best dishes come from love and instincts. Have fun with it [and] taste as you go, but always remember, it’s not about perfection. It’s about sharing the joy and the love behind food.
